Biography

Robert Nyaga

Technical Director, Qualitative Research & Design

I have always been interested in understanding how people make decisions, especially those touching on their health. Thus, my research and career interests lie at the intersection of health and behavior change communication in various contexts. Specifically, I combine my health communication and research knowledge to study how people make health decisions.

At Busara, I work as a Behavioral Design and Qualitative Research Lead. In this role, I lead  a dedicated team of Qualitative and Design Specialists and Analysts in applying behavioral qualitative research combining qualitative research approaches with insights from behavioral science. I also help in adding voice in regards to behavioral and qualitative research at Busara through internal and external initiatives such as trainings, conference presentations, and engagements with clients and funders.

I am well experienced in designing qualitative research studies from start to end, applying behavioral science, collecting and analyzing data, managing teams of Field Officers and Analysts, running successful in-depth interviews (IDIs), Innovative Photovoice Discussions, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs)- both remote and in-person. My work has seen me lead research for a diverse portfolio of clients ranging from health, financial inclusion, and those working with vulnerable groups such as refugees for multi-country projects running in Ethiopia, Eswatini, Kenya, Uganda, Somalia, South Africa, Rwanda, Somalia and Nigeria.

Prior to joining Busara, I worked as a Graduate Teaching and Research Assistant at Purdue University and Illinois State University. Outside of Busara, I am a member of the National Communication Association and International Communication Association. I hold a Ph.D. in Health Communication from Purdue University, USA, Master of Arts from Illinois State University, and a Bachelor’s from Moi University, Kenya.
